What is inside the Everest Region? Many of us might be wandering here and there to know about what actually, is there inside the Everest region of Nepal. Tengboche Monastery often is known by the local name Dawa Choling Gompa whose tale starts from the very beginning, lies on the way of the Everest base camp trek. What makes this gompa more amazing is that it has occupied its area at the elevation of 3867m (12,687ft) providing stunning views of the highest peak Mt.Everest, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse. The beautiful vistas from the gate of the monastery are really the finest view that could be witnessed in the mountain region ever.   • History:

Tengboche monastery is the first Buddhist celibate monastery to be built within the Nyingma lineage of the Vajrayana Buddhism. This monastery was built in 1916 by lama Gulu under the support from its mother monastery Rongbuk monastery in Tibet. moreover, it was in loss when the original monastery was destroyed by the earthquake of 1934. Soon after that like a nightmare, there occurred a great disaster through a short circuit in 1989 which nearly burn down the old scriptures, statues, mural, and wood carvings of the monastery. Thus, finally, with the help of volunteers and funds from all over the world, Tengboche was rebuilt in 1989.

  • Structure:

The rebuilt monastery has an impressive construction with a number of camping areas and accommodations in its front the present monastery of the is built with the stone masonry in Tibetan style of building. It has large courtyards and storerooms to conducts various religious programs as well as dharma activities.

  • Nunnery and Teachings:

Vajrayana Buddhism does not restrict to teach buddha’s dharma to female. Thus Tengboche monastery in the past days pursued teachings to the nun and later the head of the monastery granted small land to make residence especially for a nun in Debuche, which is a short walk from the Tengboche.

In addition to this, there are many monks staying in the monastery to learn Buddhist literature and dharma.

  • Festivals and Culture:

This monastery was mainly built with the help of sherpa ancestors, so the practices and traditions performed in the gompa are quite matching with that of sherpas. Moreover, the Tengboche monastery holds a colorful festival called “ Mani Rimbdu” in every October in which enactments of legendary figures are conducted with pleasing music and dances. And visitors are warmly welcomed to take part in this festive moods, thus many trekkers and travelers book their trip to coincide with this festival.

  • Activities to do inside the Monastery:
  • Meditation: one can do meditation related to Buddhism in the monastery to find peace. Lamas and gurus give a blessing for the trekkers and mountaineers for their safe journey inside the monastery. If you are interested you can participate in evening worship (Puja) inside.
  • Donation(Daan): Buddhist believes giving donation means building up a way to bring prosperity in their life. one can donate a small amount or offers incense to impress the god.
  • Puja: one can do puja; which means praying to god and goddess for the good life by offering flowers and bowing in front of the statue. Monk or lamas are also regarded as the reincarnation of the Buddhists. So one should show respect to them.

Apart from these religious activities, one can continue to Everest Base Camp, Pheriche, the hamlet of Gorakshep and Kala Patthar(5545m) the vantage point after visiting the Tengboche monastery.
